New Year: Best Skin
Happy New Year! We’ve made it through another year and it’s now time (see what I did, there) to talk about that New Year’s Resolution you’re about to make and hopefully, not break in 2018.
For the last couple of months, I’ve been a little lackadaisical with my skin routine and I’m embarrassed to admit this, but I’ve definitely skipped a few face washes at night and went to sleep with makeup on when I’m exhausted. I also put off going to my check-up with my dermatologist because I was “busy” (we’re all busy right?) and missed my annual appointment. Needless to say, while my skin is hanging in there, I haven’t been as diligent as I should have been in 2017. This is why my New Year’s Resolution is to take GREAT care of my skin in 2018. I work out, eat healthily and even take vitamins, so why on earth would I not give my skin the same attention I give the rest of my body?
So, for the last couple of years, I’ve been going to Sutton Dermatology + Aesthetics in Lincoln (Michelle Sitzman is the PA-C I’ve seen and she’s fantastic) and they are well known for their expertise and attention to patient care. I talked to them about teaming up for a collaboration on my blog about skin care, and for the next few months, I’ll be working with them to bring you some expert information about some of their procedures and how you can better improve your skincare routine. Full disclosure here: they did allow me to try some of their services on the aesthetic side free of charge, so that I could review it right here on the blog and also bring you some firsthand information about my experience with Sutton.
If you read anything on my blog, you’ll know that more often than not, I’m talking about how to save money on everything from clothes to gifts. BUT, I will say, I’ve always truly believed the one area of my life where I should splurge, is skin care. While I typically get a facial once every six weeks, I’ve always wanted to try what’s known to many of us as “the Kim Kardashian Vampire Facial.” At Sutton, they call it the PRP treatment, paired with their microneedling procedure.
And lucky for me, Sutton offered me the chance to try this procedure myself and see what the benefits are. Honestly, I’ve always wondered about the procedure’s benefits and why Kim K. decided to do it. According to Sutton, it usually takes about 4 to 5 treatments for patients to start seeing the benefits and while yes, each treatment isn’t cheap, the benefits of treatment include “improvement in your skin’s hydration, texture and tone, reduction of fine lines, and increased natural collagen production.”
While I won’t go through the treatment process step-by-step just yet (I’ve had my first appointment already), I will tell you that already, I left the appointment with some new knowledge about skin care. While a procedure like this can do wonders for your skin, you still have to dial in your skincare routine at home, which is why I asked Kerri Otto, the PA-C I’m working with at Sutton the money question: what is my skin routine currently missing?
While everyone’s skin is different, the one piece of advice that Kerri gave me is going to be a huge part of my skin care resolution this year: wear sunscreen every day. Right now, I don’t do that. I thought I did (I even told Kerri I do but it turns out that my moisturizer does NOT have SPF) and a quick Google search will tell you that sunscreen is so important and even in the winter, ultraviolet rays are ALWAYS present. That said, wearing sunscreen every day is really important and I’m already thankful that one trip to Sutton taught me something new. I’m currently trying one of their sunscreen products, SkinMedica, a broad spectrum SPF 34 Sunscreen. Check it out below (they do sell it at Sutton locally in Lincoln at their new location).
I’m excited to try the second treatment and in just a couple of weeks, I’ll have a more in-depth post for you guys on what I’ve learned about it. I’ll also be partnering with Sutton on a few different posts about skincare, so if you have questions, send them my way and let’s talk. Happy New Year’s and don’t forget to put on the sunscreen!
